Islamists in Turkey: from the Rule of Law to the Law of Some
7-9:30pm
AUC - Tahrir Square
Koray Çalışkan will be presenting on Sunday 10 November 2013, a talk titled “Islamists in Turkey: from the Rule of Law to the Law of Some,” in Oriental Hall at the Tahrir American University Cairo campus. The Middle East Studies Center and the Department of Law is hosting this important event.
Ruled by the AKP (the Justice and Development Party) since 2002, Turkey presents itself as a political model to the Islamic world for its working democracy and secular political system. Yet the model seems not to be working. Çalışkan will be looking at the changing nature of AKP ideology and politics and its shifting relationship to the military. In exploring these realms, he reflects on a new logic of political engagement, and an ideological shift from democratic conservatism to Islamism.
Çalışkan is associate professor of politics at Boğaziçi University. Working on Middle East politics and political parties, Çalışkan is a columnist with Radikal newspaper and a program host for +1 News Channel in Istanbul. He received his Ph.D. with distinction from New York University. His book Market Threads (Princeton University Press) focused on markets in Egypt, Turkey and the United States. Çalışkan also owns a film production company and has directed many documentaries as well as a popular feature.
